Callaway Golf Clubs | 2011 Irons, Woods & Big Bertha Drivers
“Blending artistry and technology with golf knowledge.”
That’s the motto of Callaway Golf Company, a well-known manufacturer of golf clubs, balls, bags, and apparel that was bought by Ely R. Callaway, Jr. back in 1982 when it was known as Callaway Hickory Stick. In 1988, the company became known as solely Callaway and has remained so to this day.
Callaway’s Modern Technology
Over the years, Callaway placed an intensive focus on technology and re-invention, hiring engineers from Du Pont and Boeing among many other high tech firms. Their results have given today’s golfers an impressive variety of game-improving products to choose from.
One of Callaway’s latest innovations is a material called “Forged Composite.” This material is a collaboration with Lamborghini, the same company that manufactures high-end sports cars. It is both lighter and stronger that titanium — so much so that during product testing, forged composite was shown to have more than double the carrying capacity of titanium. Forged composite was first introduced with the Diablo Octane drivers. Golfers who tested these forged composite drivers vs. titanium clubhead drivers had shots at least 8 yards longer, on average.
Clubs can also be customized with Callaway’s OptiFit Weighting System. This weights the clubhead in Draw, Neutral, or Fade depending on how you hit the ball. A Draw helps reduce a slice, a Fade helps reduce a hook, and Neutral has the most workability.
Callaway Drivers
Most Callaway drivers are fitted with Hyperbolic Face Technology. This means that the driver has a larger sweet spot that it normally would. If you have a habit of hitting the ball slightly off-center, the larger sweet spot will correct that and still give the ball plenty of speed, distance, and consistency.
Low handicappers should test out this technology with the FT-9 driver for a more traditional look, or the FT-iQ driver for something more modern.
Callaway Woods & Irons
Woods, irons, and hybrids also have a modified clubface design with Callaway’s Variable Face Technology (VFT). This means that the face material is ultra-thick in the middle and ultra-slim around the edges in hybrid and wood clubs, so that more mass is available in the sweet spot to propel the ball upon impact. More mass means more energy — shown in Einstein’s theory of relativity — so more energy hitting the ball means it flies longer and higher. In Callaway irons, the clubface has a much lower center of gravity. This makes the launch angle higher and the trajectory more favorable.
For starters, take a peek at how this VFT helps the Callaway FT iZ hybrid and the X Tour fairway wood.
Callaway Golf Balls
Callaway golf balls come in several different models. They feature hexagonal dimples for better surface area, urethane and surlyn materials to maximize distance, and multiples layers and cores to reduce spin. Take a look at the Tour iZ as an example — it’s a favorite of many tour professionals.

Hybrid Combo Cavity Back w/ Wide Sole
Before Callaway designed these irons, they did some research on where high handicappers hit the golf ball. Apparently, their findings were that we miss a lot of shots low on the clubface. Good thing they didn’t consult with me because they would have discovered that some of us ...

"Ergonomically" means ...

Black Grooved Mack Daddy X S300
This Callaway Jaws Wedge will bite on the green like a rabid pit bull. Callaway calls these grooves the "Mack Daddy" because they are the maximum conforming depth and width allowed by the USGA. And trust me, they will spin the ball.

Titanium Clubhead
You're looking at the Big Bertha Diablo. I know very little Spanish, but I'm pretty sure "Diablo" means "Devil." Now why would a club maker name their new driver "the devil?" I usually reserve this terminology for clubs I just chucked into the woods.
Perhaps it's because the ...
