TaylorMade Golf Clubs | 2011 Irons, Woods & Set Reviews
Yes, there are some brands that just put me into autopilot agreement when I think of them. Apple. Nike. Red Robin.
And TaylorMade.
History of TaylorMade
In 1979, golf freak Gary Adams invented the type of equipment that would change the face of golf across the globe: The TaylorMade Metalwood. The clubs were not received without skepticism. Until this time, no large technological changes had been made to the traditional golf club, and it took some convincing to get the public to accept that a metal wood would actually be more beneficial to a player than what they were used to.
First arriving at the 1979 PGA Merchandise Show, the odd-looking clubs made quite an impact, but the real genius was in Adams convincing 47 professionals who were competing in the 1979 PGA Club Professional Championship to use the clubs. The exposure on this circuit and the adoption by trusted pros created quite a demand for the clubs — so that by 1983 the metal woods were commonplace on the tour.
Other companies saw this innovation and immediately began to follow suit. The type of club gained in popularity. TaylorMade partnered with Salomon, and the financial stability created a tremendous platform for more innovation. The Burner and Burner plus made their first appearance in the mid ’80s, and more and more golfers demanded the clubs.
The Burner Bubble driver in the mid ’90s exploded the company’s popularity, creating a shaft that would create faster clubhead speed with no extra effort. Having the prototype be in the bag that won the Masters didn’t hurt matters at all.
In the late ’90s, Salomon turned over ownership to Adidas and an even more profitable and financially aggressive company became the parent to a very successful TaylorMade.
Since this acquisition, TaylorMade has continued to produce some of the most innovative, sharp, and exciting clubs that consistently create demand in pro shops everywhere.
Taylormade Drivers and Irons
Not only has TaylorMade created stirs with their Burner Drivers, and even new 440cc innovations such as the R11 Driver, but they make some pretty amazing irons as well. The “cavity back” look has been popular for some time, but these utilize a technology known as “inverted cone technology.” The result? Big sweet spots. Easier irons to hit. Faster clubhead speed without trying to kill it. The CGB Irons definitely live up to the TaylorMade name.
When I happen to be visiting another town, there are a few stops that I always make. I’ll drop by the Apple store. I’ll glance through Nike outlets. I will most definitely slam a Red Robin Burger. And you can bet your Bubble that I’ll stop in a sports store and ogle the newest TaylorMade stuff.

Game Improving Club from Golf Digest 2011 Hotlist
Oh, oh, oh, an ice cold milk and an Oreo cookie... They forever go together…
I apologize, but there is something about the color scheme of this driver that makes me sing that song.
I had an opportunity to hit this driver last month at the driving range after a nice ...
440cc Adjustable Club from Golf Digest 2011 Hot List
There's no doubt that this driver was the best new product of 2011. I see these Oreo cookie-looking things all over the place. They're on the Tours and all over the muni's that I play. Maybe it's just that I notice them more because they stand out ...
Men’s Iron Set
You know you have something hot on your hands when the anticipated introduction date is nearly a month away and people are already lining up to buy it. Such is the story with the new -- and highly anticipated -- TaylorMade R11 irons. Given the ...
Fairway Golf Game Improving Club w/ Graphite or Steel Shaft
Another entry into the game-improvement fairway wood category is TaylorMade's V Steel 3-wood. This fairway wood features a unique "V-shaped" sole, designed to minimize resistance and allowing the clubhead to glide through/along the turf -- in any number of conditions -- and remain square through impact. ...
Men’s Iron Set w/ Firm Flex Shaft, Perimiter Weighted Max Forgiveness
Forgiveness: these days it’s a lot easier to get from my golf club than my girlfriend. Okay, so maybe I booked a tee time on our anniversary. It’s not like she can’t come along and drive the cart.
For a golfer, of course forgiveness means keeping the ball ...
Men’s White Mallet, Center Shaft
Nah. Sorry, TaylorMade. This Corzo ghost putter didn't do it for me. Now before you start to judge -- no, it's not because it is a long putter and I have some kind of fear that using a belly putter makes me look older. I ...
Men’s Graphite Shaft, 17 – 28 Degree Loft
This club feels great. I hate the fact that I even like a club called a "rescue club," because it is obviously very telling of my game and how much I need to be... uh... rescued. Not only does this pick the ball up quickly and get ...
R7 Max Iron w/ Graphite Shaft, 4-PW SW
TaylorMade is a name I frequently associate with high-caliber golf performance. Aimed at the biggest-bang-for-the-buck buyer (like me), this 8-piece set (4 iron-PW, SW) provides maximum distance in an easy-to-hit iron due to its super-sized design and thin, fast face. Equipped with the RE-AX Super Fast graphite ...
Men’s Golf Inverted Cone w/ Steel Shaft
I have to admit. I didn't buy the whole "inverted cone" technology when it first came out. I thought it was just another new-fangled, run-of-the-mill goofball gimmick that would get us duffers to buy more stuff. TaylorMade is making more and more of a believer out of ...
Magnetic Driver 460cc Carbon Fiber
The music starts. "I hear, that jingle-jangle-jingle..." It clatters in time with your walk. You wince every time you hear that dull clack and clank. Your driver (yes, the one you spent good money on) is rattling against your other clubs. You could use this ...
Women’s CGB Max Clubs, Weighted Tungsten Largest Clubface
My wife does not need another edge. Enough already, TaylorMade. You realize that these ladies make their way into our foursomes, tee up yards ahead of us, have no crazy-angry-over-the-top ego that makes them swing too hard, and put it down the middle every time? You know this, ...
Jason Day Masters Golf Club
I gotta tell ya, the new look of the R11 is growing on me. It's a white crown with a black face. I didn't like it at first, but after watching Jason Day at the Masters, now I'm thinking of buying the driver and the ...
Easy Distance Noodle+ for Slow Swing Speeds
What makes a golf ball fly through the air? No, it's not clubhead speed. And no, it's not power. These things certainly contribute to the ball traveling farther, but the main thing that gets the ball moving towards the heavens is the angle of your clubface ...
New 2011 Mens Golf Club w/ Small Clubhead 440cc
I can't believe my eyes. TaylorMade's new 2011 driver is going smaller! What happened to the modern day adage "bigger is better?" I just assumed by 2011 we'd have clubheads about the size of microwave ovens.
Au Contraire, my young apprentice -- TaylorMade is abandoning this theory for ...
Long Shaft w/ Sloped Crown, Super Light 460cc TP
I just finished watching Robert Garrigus pound monster drives with this new TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 2.0 during the 2011 Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui. The driver jumps out at you because it's very unique-looking with an all-white crown and a charcoal black face. Garrigus lost in a playoff to Jonathon ...
SuperFast Extra Large Golf Club 200cc
Well, it's big. In fact, this is the biggest clubhead on a 3 wood that I've seen. It is a monster 200CC clubhead that is shaped like the wing of a fighter jet. The idea is to make the club more aerodynamic and wind-resistant so ...
Adjustable Hosel Lie & Loft, Womens Club Lightweight
The R9s with the adjustable clubfaces are among my favorites. It took me a little longer than most people to get on the bandwagon of an adjustable clubface because I was a purist and thought "You fix your swing, not your club." But that was short-sighted because ...
Milled Womens Golf Clubs, Right Handed
If you are a fan of TaylorMade clubs, then you already know about their inverted cone technology. This technology was originally developed for their drivers. It's CNC-milled directly into the back side of the golf club. This allows TaylorMade to drastically vary the thickness ...
Ladies Golf Utility Club, Low Gravity
This is the lady's version of the very popular TaylorMade Burner Rescue Hybrid. As the name implies, the club is designed to rescue you from the trouble. I think you'll find that with this club, it is much easier to get the ball out of the rough ...
Large Golf Club 460cc with Choice of Lightweight Shaft & Loft
This is a good price for a modern driver built to be extremely forgiving. Ladies, if you have been eyeballing the new, larger drivers, you might want to dive in on this '09 TaylorMade Burner.
The first thing you've probably already noticed by looking at the picture is that ...
Womens Golf SuperFast 460cc Lightweight
The clubhead of this Burner SuperFast looks to me like the wing of a fighter jet. Or better yet, one of those Droids that the air force uses to spy on people. You heard it here first, I guarantee a club maker is going to come out with ‘The ...
Womens Adjustable Movable Weight R9 460cc
I'm licking my chops looking at this driver. This is easily my favorite new driver of 2010, and I really like it for the ladies, especially because of the adjustable head with the movable weight technology.
Most of you probably have already realized that the biggest thing we all struggle ...
Mens Club for Long Distance, High Flight
This TaylorMade Raylor Hybrid picks your golf ball out of the rough like no other. The shape of the head is specifically designed to get through the long stuff and launch your ball high and long.
The leading edge is pointed, and the clubhead is very compact. ...
Adjustable 460 cc Clubhead
This is the big-headed version of the popular R9 TP Driver. The maxed-out 460cc adjustable driver gives you the adjustability of a ginormous clubface.
With TaylorMade's Flight Control Technology (FCT), you can change the head to eight different positions. FCT will give you up to 40 yards of ...
Adjustable Weights Supertri R9
This club is a bit pricey, but for good reason. Owning this driver is like owning five or six different drivers, because it has TaylorMade's Flight Control Technology (FCT). FCT will give you up to 75 yards of right-left variance, 3 degrees of variance in ...
Extra Long Lightweight Burner 460
Now that club makers have maxed out the size of our drivers, the latest trend is aerodynamics. How else are we going to add clubhead speed to those toaster ovens on the end of a stick?
The TaylorMade Burner SuperFast uses extra length and extra speed to give you ...
Soft Feel & High Spin
If you are looking for a wedge that plows right through the rough, this one is my pick. The TaylorMade TP xFT does everything well, but is really good out of the thick stuff.
This clubface is specifically designed to promote increased spin. The face is made separately and ...
Adjustable Weight 430cc Stiff Shaft
With all the gargantuan 460cc drivers, this R9 TP is a breath of fresh air with its 430CC head. I like this Taylormade R9 TP Driver because it's a more compact club head. What happened to actually trying to work the ball with your driver instead ...
Urethane Spin Control Penta TP
This golf ball has more layers than a German Chocolate cake… five to be exact. Hence the "penta" in Penta TP. The idea was to create a ball that will benefit every swing speed.
Let's take a look-see:
The first layer is the cover. It's made of urethane. ...
Iron Set w/ Offset Cavity Back Inverted
Here is a nice set of game-improving irons. The first thing I noticed is the modern-looking design: a cavity back design with a notch over the sweet spot.
The inverted cone technology expands the COR Zone. COR is the trampoline effect that you get off of the clubface. ...
KBS Steel Shaft
I would use the word "innovative" when describing this set of game-improving irons. They incorporate an inverted-core technology to expand the sweet spot, giving the irons a bigger and hotter clubface. The cavity back is very traditional looking, and I like the basic teardrop shape.
The 3-through-6 irons have ...
Stainless Steel Adjustable
The itsy bitsy spider walked up the water spout… down fell the putts and knocked the wagers out. I like this Rossa Monza Itsy Bitsy Spider a whole lot more then its larger predecessor, the Rossa Monza Spider Putter. The smaller head is much easier to look ...
Adjustable Lie & Loft Angle
Adjustable clubs are the latest rage and I believe TaylorMade was the first to do it. This TaylorMade R9 has an adjustable hosel that allows you to change the lie and loft angle to eight different settings. This is TaylorMade's FCT (Flight Control Technology) which will ...
Kia Ma | Black Tungsten w/ Alignment Aid
‘Tis the season. Look, you know Hubby is going to come to the plate with diamond necklace and earrings. I've got the male equivalent right here.
This is a beautiful putter by TaylorMade and it's from their new line of Kia Ma. Kia Ma is an in-house craftsman for ...
Core Classic Heel Shafted Blade
Here's TaylorMade Rossa Core Classic Lambeau putter. It's your classic heel shafted blade design. I'm not big on the huge mallet style putters, but prefer the blade style putter for its feel and feedback. This is a tour quality putter that has a tremendous feel and a traditional look.
The ...
Large Clubface, High Swing Speed
I usually don't like these combo golf clubs sets. However, most golf club combo sets are cheap crap that you will outgrow in a few months. This is not the case with this set of TaylorMade Burner Irons. These are good quality golf clubs that I ...
Rossa Core Classics | Tuscan Nickel Finish
This is a gorgeous blade putter. It has that Tuscan nickel finish giving it a sleek look like a sports car. It has nice alignment aid -- a line drawn on the scooped-out blade. The best thing about it is TaylorMade's insert featuring 14 grooves positioned closer ...
Adjustable Weight Inverted Core
I haven't quite figured out the whole "movable weight" thing yet.
This driver, the TaylorMade R7 Limited 440CC driver is made by my favorite company for drivers. In fact, I recently reviewed my favorite one here.
But as stated above, the adjustments that can allow me to change trajectories up to 35 ...
Long Distance, Low Spin
This Burner TP (Tour Preferred) golf ball is a great middle-of-the-road golf ball. TaylorMade, in all their wisdom, came up with an economy version of their premium golf balls, the TP Black and the TP Red.
These Burner TPs are primarily a distance ball. They have an "HPF 1000 SpeedMantle169" ...
Large Heel Shafted Mallet
These big mallet putters are getting out of hand. This putter to me looks like the head of "I, Robot." If I owned this putter, I would constantly be trying to talk to it as it stared at me from my golf bag. "What do you think, ...
High Spin, Low Handicap
"Hey Popeye! How's your spin-nage?"
This is what you need to ask yourself when looking at this golf ball. One of TaylorMade's premium golf balls, the Taylor Made TP Black has more spin than the TP Red. Both balls are designed for lower handicappers with high swing speeds.
This ...
Low Handicap, High Speed, Low Spin
"To spin or not to spin?" That is the question.
Check out these TaylorMade TP Reds. This is one of TalylorMade's premium golf balls designed for lower handicappers with high swing speeds. This ball is a multilayer ball with four pieces, a soft core, two mantle layers, and a ...
Take the glove off, put the glove on. Take the glove off, put the glove on. There sure is a lot of messing around in golf. Take out your green tool. Take out your ball mark. Put away your green tool. I think people who play ...
Y.E. Yang PGA Championship
Close your eyes and imagine. (Wait -- read this first and then close your eyes...)
You're one stroke up on Tiger Woods on the last hole of the PGA Championship. Tiger led this tournament from the start, and what's more is: he's never lost a major championship when leading after ...
Adjustable Head Weight R7
Walk into any golf store and you'll see hundreds of clubs that are all essentially the same. From Nike to Callaway to Titleist to all of those cheap brands you've never bothered to try, there isn't a whole lot of innovation across the board from leading golf brands. And it's not ...
Light Weight Men’s Club
The TaylorMade Men's Burner 460 Ti Driver is, simply put, an exceptional golf club. While it doesn't aim to change the industry in any major way, it brings enough small innovations to the table to stake its claim as one of the best drivers on the market.
The most spectacular ...
Large Fairway Wood | Winn Grips
TaylorMade's Burner series has been a tried-and-true set of golf clubs over the years, and this year's is no exception. Its sleek design and large clubhead allow it to boast the highest MOI in golf. They also promote several features included in the Burner Driver that make it one of ...
Dual Inverted 450 cc
Ever notice how when you hit a particular club, well it becomes suddenly very dear to you? They can come and go in seasons. For a while, I felt like playing every shot from my 5 iron. No idea why. I just hit it well every time. ...
I am a huge fan of rescue clubs. Huge. Over-the-top ridiculous fan of rescue clubs. Why do you think that is? Because I'm consistently using them to try and finesse one up to the apron of the green on my second shot on the par 5? Uh, ...
