Golf Carts | Electric, Gas & Pull Carts
History of the Golf Cart
Ready to get super technical? The golf “cart” is actually something with wheels that is meant to carry clubs and pulled by hand. The golf “car” is the self-propelled vehicle that we strap the clubs in the back and ride in.
I know. Picky, picky.
Either way, the invention of these little bad boys made it so we wouldn’t have to lug our sticks all over the course — and let me tell you, some of us are literally all over the course.
Grocery buggies were the inspiration for the golf cart way back during WWII. Merle Williams’ “Marketeer” company took the idea of their electric store carts and translated it into the first electric golf card in Redlands, California. Other companies such as E-Z-Go and LEKTRO soon began competing in the mid ’50s.
Cushman made its first famous “Club Car” in 1958. Other companies such as Taylor-Dunn and yes, even Harley Davidson, tried their hands at the new invention.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t until the late 1970s when the gas cart made its way onto the scene.
To Walk Or Not To Walk
That is the question. The debate has taken place for years between those who simply refuse to purchase or rent the self-propelled “car,” claiming that it takes away some the stamina needed for a full round of golf, as well as diminishing any aspect of healthy exercise in the game. The opponents to the car also argue that it takes something away from the effectiveness of the shot, as a golfer can effectively “size up their shot” during a slow walking approach to their ball as opposed to “racing up to hit their next shot.” Conversely, car enthusiasts argue that they can play more, speed up play to give opportunity for more players, and allow for physically challenged golfers to play.
The Casey Martin Debate
Another interesting note in the history of the “golf cart argument” came in the form of a Supreme Court case in 2001 whether PGA pro Casey Martin would be allowed to use a golf car in Tour events due to his circulatory disorder known as Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome. The court ruled in Martin’s favor — ending the debate, but starting more interesting comparative conversations for years to come.
The Choice Is Up To You
Ultimately, one must decide for themselves what is most enjoyable, comfortable, and permissible for them. Full golf car? Packing the bag oneself? Or even somewhere in between as in a product such as the Cadie Ultimaxx? The choice is truly up to you.
See below for some golf “car” accessories, as well as some push carts — and even some powered push carts. (Talk about the best of both worlds.)
