One thing about golfers -- they are always looking for "the secret." It's only the grizzled veteran that will tell you golf is all luck, and follow that up by saying, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
This book, "Tour Tempo: Golf's Last Secret Finally Revealed," is a good book for you die-hards to have on your bookshelves. The authors have analyzed the tempo of professional golfers and come up with a ideal 3:1 ratio from backswing to downswing. Furthermore, they recorded tones in this 3:1 ratio (which are included on a CD that comes with this book.) The idea is for you to listen to them while you practice and design your golf swing accordingly.
It's a good concept, and it works. But let's not get crazy -- tempo is just one fundamental of this complex sport we are all addicted to. Make sure you have the other fundamentals and the mechanics down, or even the best tempo isn't going to help you. A good book to check out for the basics is: Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.
The other thing I like about this concept is: if you are focusing on your tempo and concentration on tones, it will get you out of what one of my teachers refers to as "paralysis of analysis," which tends to be a big problem with a lot of golfers.
