"Welcome to the penthouse suite; please come in and enjoy the view."
Most golfers already know, if you are looking at something that has the name "Scotty Cameron" on it, you better be ready to part with a good amount of cash. But what are you really paying for? And is it worth it?
In this review, I'll give you a quick overview of what you're paying for and also suggest some alternative putters that are similar to this one but don't have the Scotty Cameron name, and thus the high price tag.
This Scotty Cameron fellow has been around for a long time. He started making putters out of high school in his mommy's garage. His first real job was in 1986 with Ray Cook Golf Company. In 1993, Bernard Langer won the Masters using a Cameron prototype Anser putter. The win put Cameron on the map, and he started Cameron Golf International (1993-1994.) In 1994, Acushnet Company (Titleist's parent company) acquired the Scotty Cameron brand, and it has grown to be one of the leading brands in golf.
The Studio Select Newport 2 is a beautiful blade putter that is milled from forged 303 stainless steel. The screw weights in the sole vary from 10, 15, and 20 grams to allow the swing weight to match different shaft lengths. The topline curves just a little from heel to toe, which raises the toe and reduces the tendency to aim left. There is one solid white line for aiming.
The best thing about this putter is the look and feel. It is a total metal face, but doesn't feel like one. The putter sets up beautifully, and the custom weighting is exceptional. Cameron putters are always going to feel incredible.
TaylorMade has a very similar putter for about the same price, the TaylorMade Golf Rossa TP Daytona Putter by Kia Ma.
Neither the Cameron or the TaylorMade have a face insert. For half the price of these two "Big Name" putters, check out the Odyssey White Hot Tour #1 Putter. It is a tour quality putter that features a responsive face insert.
