Rory Mcllroy 65-66-68-69
The 22-year-old Irishman who laid an egg on Sunday at the Masters put on a Major performance this week of epic proportion.
Records set:
- 4 day total of 268, -16. Previous record: 272. Nicklaus 1980, Janzen 1993, Woods 2000, Furyk 2003. Previous record strokes under par: -12, Woods 2000. (Rory got it to -17 on Sunday before giving back a stroke.)
- 6th Player to lead wire to wire without ties. (Tiger did it twice.)
- Youngest Player to win in 88 years. Bobby Jones 1930
- Fewest holes to double digits under par: 26
- Low first 36 holes: 131
- Most strokes under par 36 holes: -11
- Largest 36 hole lead: 6
- Low first 54 holes: 199
- Most strokes under par 54 hole: -14
- Eight stroke victory was fourth largest.
Rory’s a nice kid with an amazing swing. All week it appeared that he was playing a different golf course than all the other tour pros. It was fun to watch him quietly and modestly completely dominate the field on the usually very difficult Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
Your runner up: Jason Day -8, who also came in 2nd at The Masters. Chappell, Garrigus (low American), Westwood, and Yang -6 tied for 3rd.
Next Up: The Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., June 23-36, Golf Channel/CBS, 2010 Champ: Bubba Watson
Goggin Wins in Wichita
The only other tour in action was the kids of the Nationwide tour. And 37-year-old kiddy Mathew Goggin poured in a 6 foot birdie putt on 18 to beat Kyle Thompson by one stroke at the Preferred Heath Systems Wichita Open. We should see him soon on the PGA Tour as this is his 4th Nationwide victory and 2nd this year. He leads the money list on the kiddy tour with earnings so far of $243.75 cent (plus a $25 gift certificate to Red Lobster).
Next Up: Mexico Open, El Bosque Golf Club, Leon, GTO, Mex, June 23 – 26, Golf Channel, 2010 Champ: Jamie Lovemark.
LPGA Next up: Wegmans LPGA Championship, Pittsford, NY, June 23-26, Golf Channel, 2010 Champ: Cristie Kerr
Champions Tour Next Up: Dick’s Sporting Goods Open @ En-Joie GC, Endicott, NY, June 24-26, Golf Channel, 2010 Champ: Loren Roberts
Until Next time… Have a RORY-OUS week.
